On the afternoon of November 29, 2014 , the News Agency of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) successfully held the Chinese Corner-Cultural Exchange at the coffee bar in B1 floor of gymnasium of Zhongguancun campus. The activity was held in an enthusiastic atmosphere and gained high remarks from the foreign participants.

News Agency of BIT is a student organization under the command of News Center of BIT. It is the only student organization in BIT that has official cooperation with BIT International Student Center. The aim of this activity is to provide a platform for Chinese students and international students to communicate with each other as well as exchange their cultures. It also aims to recruit more international students to join in the News Agency in order to strengthen its team.

The Chinese Corner mainly consists of five parts, including interactive games area, snack corner, calligraphy area, traditional instruments area and Hanfu (Chinese historical costume) try-on area. Detailed descriptions of each part are as follows.

Interactive Games area (Finding Characters)

This is a game that requires quite a good knowledge of Chinese characters. There will be split parts of Chinese characters on the table and the participants need to try to combine two of them together. If the combination makes sense, then that is a successful try.The game designer aims to help the international students with these seemly complicated Chinese characters and spread the concept that Chinese characters usually consist of two parts, which is the true spirit of “He”(和), which means harmony and accordance.

International students took an active part in this interesting game. One of them said “It’s really difficult to learn these Chinese characters, but this presents a better opportunity to learn them.”

Snack Corner

The Snack Corner has various kinds traditional Chinese food, like lvdagun(驴打滚) and zhouheiya(周黑鸭). This is a place where all visitors could have a try of these wonderful snacks and refill themselves.

Chinese Calligraphy Teaching Area

Chinese Calligraphy is one of the most important parts of Chinese culture. The writing brush was the only tool for writing more than one thousand years ago, and together with ink stick, ink slab and paper, we get the “four treasures of the study”(文房四宝).In this section, students from Wuyangzhai, an association of BIT which teaches Chinese calligraphy and painting, and several students from the Capital University of Economics a Business, were invited as honored guests to teach international students how to write a Chinese character with a writing brush. In addition, if they have a Chinese name, they will get a traditional handwriting of their names! Of course if a Chinese name is still up in the air, anything like the name of their countries is also acceptable. After learning the keys of how to use a writing brush, international students could have a try by themselves. Some of them really did a good job even in writing very difficult characters.

Traditional Instrument Teaching Area

In this section, we got guzheng(古筝)and dizi(笛子). Guzheng is a typical stringed instrument, while dizi is a kind of wind instrument. International students could enjoy the beautiful sounds of nature and even have a chance to try it in person.

Hanfu (Chinesehistorical costume) try-on Area

Clothes are an important part of the daily life in ancient China, and can you imagine what it is like to wear the costume in Han Dynasty, Hanfu? Well, it’s really cool. Hanfu has some special features like its long and wide sleeve, and that reflects some customs of the Han people. For example, when drinking on formal occasions, they usually hide their faces behind the wide sleeves. The international students on spot tried on the Hanfu and took some photos to memorize this special moment.

This event shows the epitome of Chinese culture from different aspects, stimulates  foreign students’ interests in Chinese culture, strengthens multinational and multilingual communication between students, and enriches the campus cultural  life of students which has received all praise from foreign students. This is the initial attempt of News Center to make foreign students as entry point for international publicity .
